Rain on the Parade

DSCF1667Just after lunch my phone rang, and Nagesh hit me with “Err yeah it’s raining and my tarp hasn’t come in the post yet… Let’s just do it on Wednesday night instead”

DSCF1640So don’t ask me how or why, but Nagesh and I always have an easy time running into hard luck on the bicycles. Whether it’s a rogue rock sending him over the bars down a firetrail in the middle of nowhere, an inconsolable tyre, or a broken Ventolin puffer, there’s always something. Maybe by writing about it the universe will get the message… What gives?

DSCF1662So on Monday we planned to ride out into the Brindabellas around dinner time, set up, drink whisky out of dinky camp cups, and have a night of it. But the post was late in delivering the only thing that was going to keep Nagesh dry. That, and it was bucketing down on the radar down south. So we called it off.

DSCF1665But on Wednesday we swung by Yarralumla kebabs before rolling for about two and a half hours out to a secret spot, (“secret” and “probably illegal” are interchangeable in this sentence). As fate would have it, the second we arrived it started raining. Having scouted the flattest, safest spot my tent was up in time to stash our gear while we set up the tarp & hammock combo Nagesh was trying out for the first time. Sitting under the tarp, listening to the rain, and enjoying some Monte Carlos & New Zealand Riesling we shot the shit and hoped the rain would just be a fling, and not a long term relationship.

DSCF1657 DSCF1649Daybreak deep under the tall eucalyptus trees called for coffee, oats with blackberries, trying in vain to dry my tent out in the slivers of sun, coffee, and hoping we didn’t leave anything behind. If we thought the rain was a pain, riding back into town via Uriarra crossing was going to be a not so welcome surprise. Overnight a ferocious wind had whipped up, and while it got rid of the rain for us, it also got rid of any chances of an easy morning roll back into town. Struggling past the pine plantations & farms on the outskirts of town, we were well and truly ready for some hot chips when we rolled into the Hamlet.

DSCF1642So who’s coming next week?

Nice coffee setup, especially the beans ✌ Can I ask what tarp you’re using?

You’d have to ask Nagesh… It’s a custom one, but it is made in Aus. Find him on Instagram at @mouche!
